  • Chalk it up to creative genius: When Bob and Terri Maldonado saw Plan AX-95347, it wasn't necessarily the facade that caught their attention, but rather, Bob explains, "we liked the floor plans themselves." Since the layout reflected the wishes of the couple, Pennsylvania natives who've lived in Texas for most of their almost-ten-year marriage, they bought the plans and found a reputable builder.

Bill at M.H. Craig Hill Country Homes, whom the Maldonados recommend highly, landed the job. After a fair amount of work cutting down trees—Bob is quick to note that the half-acre property still boasts 68 oak trees—and clearing brush and rocks from the hill-country terrain, the Maldonados broke ground on their Spicewood, Texas, homesite in April 2002.

Even though the couple was very attracted to the floor plans, Bob and Terri chose to tweak a few things here and there to accommodate their entertaining style and personalize the plan. First, they enlarged the kitchen to include a sizable pantry. Although this change resulted in a slightly smaller foyer, Bob says this trade-off was worth it for them.

The next changes involved the secondary bedrooms. "We don't have any kids," Bob says, "so we made Bedroom 3 [on the original plans] a guest room and turned Bedroom 2 into a game room." To properly outfit the game room, the rear wall was bumped out to the edge of the porch for a pool table, which is accessed via French doors. A wet bar was also added. Last, the living room's fireplace became a two-sided fireplace that the two rooms could share. Bob explains with a laugh, "My wife and I went back and forth on this. I wanted the see-through fireplace." Although Bob got his way on this point, he adds that the two had about equal input on the final design.

In order to include a Jacuzzi tub, an oversized shower and his-and-hers walk-in closets in the master suite, the couple did away with the storage in the garage, added the saved square footage to the suite, and slightly reconfigured the master bath. In the bedroom, French doors replaced the bay window. The back porch was lengthened to wrap around as far as these doors.

Bob and Terri's love of Southwestern style dictated the look and feel of the entire home. Instead of traditional red brick, they covered the home with gorgeous blond stone. Rustic cedar posts support the front and back porches, while warm red accents provide exactly the right amount of perk. Exotic-looking ceiling fans, recessed lighting and outdoor speakers make the back porch one of the Maldonados' favorite places to relax.

They also find themselves spending a lot of time indoors, where the South-of-the-border motif continues. The same light-colored stone is found on the fireplace and the front of the wet bar. Stained concrete floors and luxurious, long-lasting frise carpet complement each other and give the home a sense of continuity. A lighthearted chile pepper collection adorns hooks and nooks in the kitchen, while a state-of-the-art speaker system provides entertainment in almost every room.

Bob and Terri moved into their new home in September 2002, but they already have plans for future changes. The couple hopes to add onto the game room and the guest room someday. An in-ground pool in the backyard sounds pretty good to them, too. With plans for the home's future already in place, they'll "stay in it a long time. We really love our home."
