Colonial deacons who served the faithful used hardwood benches with large under-seat compartments to store hymnals and bibles. With extra storage space always a concern, the idea of dual-purpose furniture is just as appropriate today. This deacon's bench measures 18" deep, 36" wide, 38" high. Build it using common lumber, moldings and dowl rod. Use it to add seating in the front hallway, kitchen or fireside.
